Coaching
Coaching is the process of ongoing board training and development.
The purpose of coaching is to assist the board with implementing
change. Boards who desire a governance approach to board leadership
can use coaching for the development of board roles and
responsibilities. Through coaching, boards systematically identify
board issues, strategically plan for desired change, and work toward
the achievement of their stated vision.
Typically, board members, if they receive any training at all,
participate in short term, one-day workshops. This information is
valuable, often inspirational. Participants are encouraged to commit
to making changes that will positively affect their board operations.
Regrettably, although they leave with valuable ideas and a desire for
change, much of their enthusiasm dwindles soon after the workshop.
Successfully implementing change requires careful preparation,
planning, supervision and assessment. If the needed change is
substantive, the board must learn to think and develop in new and
different ways. The Board Coach leads board members through this
process of transformation, and guides the board on its journey.
